Commanders Could Load Substantial Opening at Offensive Tackle in 2025

As the Washington Commanders head into the 2024 season, one of their biggest areas of concern is at offensive tackle, particularly at left tackle. This position is crucial for protecting quarterback Jayden Daniels’ blindside, and with the team having allowed a league-high 65 sacks last season (tied for second most), finding a solution here is urgent. In his latest 2025 mock draft, Matt Miller has the Commanders addressing this gap by selecting one of college football's top talents: Texas offensive tackle Kelvin Banks Jr. at No. 5 overall. If the draft were held tomorrow, left tackle and edge rush would likely be the Commanders' top priorities. While Miller’s projections could change by April, general manager Adam Peters has the opportunity to secure Daniels' protection on the left side of the line.

Banks is the ideal candidate for the role, standing at 6'4" and weighing 324 pounds. As a junior, he has allowed just two sacks in his two seasons starting at left tackle for Texas. Banks has been regarded as a first-round prospect since his senior year at Summer Creek High School in Houston, Texas, where he earned the Class 6A-District 21 Offensive MVP title in 2021—an impressive feat for an offensive player. His versatility to play both tackle spots and even guard, if necessary, adds tremendous value. 247Sports analyst Gabe Brooks highlighted Banks' potential as a high-floor, high-ceiling prospect, emphasizing his durability and consistency as a multi-year starter. Banks has been a key contributor to Texas' success, including their 2023 College Football Playoff appearance.

For Washington, their left tackle situation in 2024 is uncertain, with veteran Cornelius Lucas, rookie Brandon Coleman, and Trent Scott all vying for the spot. Lucas, a reliable journeyman, has started 37 games for Washington since joining the team in 2020, including a career-high 12 starts in 2022. Scott, a former undrafted free agent out of Grambling State, has started 22 games over six seasons with multiple teams, including two for the Commanders in 2023. Coleman, a third-round pick in the 2024 draft, was a two-time All-Big 12 selection at Texas Tech.

Washington’s offensive line struggled last season, with quarterback Sam Howell being sacked an NFL-record 65 times, breaking the franchise's previous record of 49. Following numerous changes across the line in 2023, the Commanders are making further adjustments in 2024, with three new starters expected: at center, left guard, and left tackle.
